Ground Beetles

Why they're helpful

Both larvae and adults consume slugs, snails, cutworms.

Identification

These are black beetles that are about 1/8-1.5 in. long.

How to attract

These beetles require decaying plant matter. One option is to build beetle banks, by adding 12-18 in. mounds to crops and adding 3+ species of bunch grass. Plants such as milkweed, dill, mountain mint, and fennel can all attract these insects.
