Seed Scarification and Stratification
Not all seeds will germinate readily when planted. Many species have developed tough, protective coatings or dormancy mechanisms that help them survive unfavorable conditions in their native environments. Hard seed coats can be relatively impermeable to water, preventing the seed from absorbing the moisture needed to begin germination.
In this article, we’ll cover the differences between scarification and stratification, and discuss a few methods for each so you can improve germination success for some of the more difficult seeds in your garden.
What is Seed Dormancy?
Seeds are adapted to grow into mature plants, but germinating at the wrong time can be fatal. Because of this, many species have evolved ways to remain dormant until conditions are right, relying on environmental and chemical triggers to signal when it is safe to begin growing.
Dormancy can be broken by a variety of environmental cues, including fire, water, temperature, and other environmental factors. For this article, we’re focused on:

- Temperature (Stratification)
Scarification
Think of scarification as 'scarring' the seed.
Scarification weakens or damages the outer seed coat, allowing water and gases to pass through and reach the embryo inside. Some seeds have particularly hard outer coats that prevent them from absorbing the moisture needed to begin germination.
There are a few ways to scarify, and the size and toughness of the seed will play a significant role.
Rough and Tumble
This method works exceptionally well for small seeds, although it can work with seeds of many sizes, particularly those that would naturally be scattered or dispersed freely, like many wildflowers. In nature, many seeds are scarified by being trodden on, kicked around, or blown by the wind against rocks and gritty surfaces.
To mimic this at home, you will need an appropriately sized jar with a lid (a jam jar works great), your seeds, and some gritty material. A mixture of soil, sand, and fine gravel is excellent.
The roughness of the material should be matched to the seed. Delicate seeds need a gentler abrasive, while particularly hard-coated seeds may tolerate coarser material.
Simply add your seeds and your medium to the jar, place the lid on tightly, and give the jar a good shake, a little like making a cocktail.
Start with a short shake, then inspect the seeds before repeating if necessary. It's important to be careful not to shred or crush the seeds.
Sandpaper
This method works well with larger seeds — ones that you can easily pick up individually and that have harder coats.
Using medium-grit sandpaper, around the 120–150 range, gently buff part of the seed coat until the top layer begins to wear away. Look for changes in colour, texture, or small dips in the surface. Usually, thinning a small area of the outer coat is enough. Stop before reaching the softer tissue beneath, as damaging the embryo inside can prevent germination.
If you have a lot of seeds, you can use two sheets of sandpaper. Place one sheet on a flat surface, grit-side up, and arrange your seeds on top in a single layer. Then, using the second piece of sandpaper, gently rub the seeds between the two sheets.
Nail Clippers
This method is a favourite for larger seeds, like luffah, which have particularly tough coats. Using a set of nail clippers, you can gently clip a small piece from the edge of the seed, exposing or thinning the coat beneath.
If you don’t have a spare set of clippers, a nail file also works very well for this method.
Stratification
Stratification is the process of exposing seeds to specific temperature and moisture conditions to help break dormancy. Cold stratification is the most common; however, some seeds have more complex dormancy requirements and may need a period of warm stratification followed by cold stratification.
For many seeds that require only cold stratification, sowing outdoors in fall may be enough to allow the process to happen naturally over winter. If your climate provides conditions similar to those the species would experience in its native habitat, this may be all that is needed.
Cold Stratification
Not everyone has the climate or winter conditions needed to stratify seeds outdoors. Thankfully, it is easy to recreate winter conditions at home.
Place the seeds in a small container or resealable bag with a slightly damp medium, such as vermiculite, sand, or a paper towel. The medium should be moist but not soaking wet, as excessive moisture can encourage mould and cause seeds to rot.
Label the container with the plant name and the date, then place it in a refrigerator. Most seeds requiring cold stratification need temperatures of around 1–5°C (34–41°F) for several weeks or months, depending on the species.
Warm Stratification
Warm stratification is less common, but some seeds require a period of warm, moist conditions before they can respond to cold stratification. This mimics the conditions seeds may experience after dispersal in late summer or autumn, before winter arrives.
The process is similar to cold stratification. Place the seeds in a small container or resealable bag with a slightly damp medium, such as vermiculite, sand, or a paper towel. Keep the medium moist but not waterlogged.
Instead of placing the seeds in the refrigerator, keep them somewhere consistently warm. Depending on the species, this may mean room temperature or a warmer location. The length of warm stratification varies considerably, so check the requirements for your particular seeds.
Check your seeds every week or two during stratification. Make sure the medium is still slightly damp and watch for mould or seeds that have begun to germinate. If a seed sprouts during stratification, carefully remove and plant it.
Seeds That Need Both
Some seeds have more than one dormancy mechanism and may require both scarification and stratification before they will germinate successfully.
A hard seed coat can prevent water from reaching the embryo, while internal dormancy mechanisms may prevent germination even after the seed has absorbed moisture. In these cases, scarification allows water to enter the seed, while stratification provides the environmental conditions needed to break the remaining dormancy.
The correct order depends on the species. Some seeds should be scarified before stratification, while others may have more specific requirements. Always check the needs of the particular species before treating your seeds.
Because these treatments can take weeks or even months, it is worth labelling seeds carefully with the species name, treatment method, and start date. If your seeds have been stratifying longer than intended, don't necessarily throw them away. As long as they remain healthy and haven't rotted or decayed, they may still be worth planting. I've had seeds emerge a year after planting, so germination can sometimes be a little unpredictable.
Planting
Once the required stratification period has finished, sow the seeds according to their normal planting requirements. Some seeds may begin germinating during stratification, particularly if the treatment lasts for several months. If this happens, carefully remove and plant them rather than waiting for the remaining seeds to finish their treatment.
Keep in mind that scarification and stratification requirements are highly species-specific. Some seeds need one treatment, some need both, and many need neither. Always check the requirements for the particular species you are growing before treating your seeds.
Keep good notes for what did and didn't work when you scarified and stratified your seeds. Seeds—and the conditions they experience—can be a little fickle, and what works well in one garden or climate may not work quite the same way in another.

Scarification and stratification may sound complicated, but both are simply ways of recreating conditions that seeds would experience naturally. Whether that means damaging a tough seed coat, exposing seeds to winter temperatures, or combining periods of warmth and cold, understanding a seed's dormancy requirements can make germination far more successful.
