Trench Composting: Soil Amendment and Conditioner
It’s no secret that compost is great for the garden; it’s nutrient-rich, full of life, and works wonders for tired soil. Traditional composting in a heap or rotating bin is excellent; however, if you want to give an area of your garden a head start or improve a particularly unproductive patch, trench composting might be worth considering.
In this article, we’ll discuss what trench composting is, its benefits, and how to make it work in your garden.
What is Trench Composting?
Whereas traditional composting keeps organic material separate from the garden bed until it has decomposed, trench composting uses the garden bed itself as the composting site. It involves digging a trench and layering organic material with soil before covering it again.
Over the following weeks and months, the organic material decomposes in place, adding organic matter to the soil and gradually releasing nutrients. By spring, a trench prepared in fall will have had time to break down substantially, making it a useful area for planting.
Why Use Trench Composting?

This can be especially useful when preparing an area for nutrient-demanding crops such as tomatoes, corn, squash, or pumpkins. Plants growing in soil with improved organic matter may also benefit from better moisture retention, although their individual watering needs will still depend on the species and growing conditions.
How Trench Composting Conditions the Soil
As the organic material in a compost trench breaks down, it does more than simply release nutrients for future plants. The decomposed material becomes part of the soil itself, helping improve its physical structure over time.
In heavy clay soils, organic matter can help improve aggregation and create more spaces for air and water to move through the soil. In sandy soils, it can help improve water and nutrient retention by increasing the soil's ability to hold moisture.
Because trench composting places this organic material below the soil surface, these improvements occur directly within the future root zone of your plants. As roots, fungi, bacteria, insects, and other soil organisms move through the area, they can gradually help distribute organic matter beyond the original trench.

How To Trench Compost
Begin by selecting the garden beds you will use for trench composting. Consider what crops you plan to grow there the following season. Crops with large or deeply penetrating root systems may benefit from the improved soil, while root vegetables can be less suitable for planting directly over a recently filled trench, particularly if the material has not fully decomposed.
For larger garden beds, consider digging trenches between future planting rows or in a zig-zag pattern across the bed. This can help distribute organic matter through a wider area rather than concentrating it in one place.
Once you have decided where to dig, create a trench approximately 12–18 inches deep, piling the removed soil nearby, as you will need it later. The trench can be as long or wide as your garden bed allows.
Materials for Trench Composting
Fruit and vegetable scraps, peelings, coffee grounds, eggshells, and other suitable kitchen scraps can be used for trench composting. Dry leaves, shredded plant material, and other untreated garden waste can also be added. Mixing wetter materials with dry, carbon-rich material can help create a more balanced environment for decomposition.
Don’t use meat, bones, or fatty foods such as cheese and salad dressing for trench composting. They have a high potential to attract wildlife, rodents, dogs, cats, or flies.
Adding Material
Next, add your organic material to the trench in relatively thin layers, covering each layer with some of the removed soil. Chopping larger scraps into smaller pieces can speed decomposition by increasing their surface area.
Continue alternating layers of organic material and soil until the trench is nearly full. Gently firm the layers as you go, but avoid compacting the soil too heavily. Once you are approximately 5–6 inches from the top of the trench, add your final layer of organic material and cover the trench completely with the remaining soil. Thoroughly water the area to provide moisture for decomposition, then leave it to break down.
Consider marking the location of your compost trenches with a garden cane, label, or length of string so you know where they are when it is time to plant.
Planting
The following planting season, plant as you normally would. Some plants can be grown directly over the former trench, while others may be better planted alongside it.
As the organic material decomposes, the soil above the trench may settle. If necessary, add a little additional soil before planting to restore the surface level of the bed.
What Should You Plant Over a Compost Trench?
Heavy-feeding vegetables can be particularly well suited to growing over or alongside a compost trench. Tomatoes, corn, squash, pumpkins, brassicas such as cabbage and broccoli, and other nutrient-demanding crops will benefit from the additional organic matter and nutrients released as the material continues to decompose.
Perennial vegetables such as rhubarb and asparagus may also benefit from soil that has been improved with organic matter. However, because these plants can remain in place for many years, it is best to prepare the area thoroughly before planting rather than repeatedly disturbing the soil around established crowns.
Root vegetables, such as carrots and parsnips, may be better planted elsewhere during the first season if the trench contains material that has not fully decomposed. Uneven or partially decomposed organic matter can contribute to irregular root growth. Once the material has broken down and the soil has settled, the area can be used more normally.
