(Phaseolus vulgaris) Bush bean (half-runner). Here's another Dakota variety, so you know it's rugged! Introduced in 1915 by Oscar H. Will & Company as part of its Pioneer Indian Collection of seeds, this one comes from the Hidatsa people of the upper Missouri River Valley. In its 1932 catalog, Oscar Will Seeds described Hidatsa Red as "a heavy yielder, hardy, drought resistant, and an excellent baking bean." We concur! The plump rose-red beans are similar to Great Northerns. Plants climb only 3 feet or so. 85 days
