(Solanum melongena). A giant of the garden, this extraordinarily large, elongated eggplant is the perfect pick if you want mammoth-sized fruit that tastes delicious! Seed collector and friend of Baker Creek, Avinash Gune, embarked on a 1,000-mile quest from Pune, India to uncover the seeds of this legendary giant eggplant. His journey led him to the quaint Indian village of Barman, nestled in Madhya Pradesh, celebrated for its fertile soil nurtured by the waters of the Narmada River, an ancient river predating the Ganges. In Barman, Avinash was fortunate to obtain a ripe fruit from local farmer Kamat Nodia, securing the precious seeds and preserving the legacy of this extraordinary variety. On his explorations, Avinash heard stories of folks claiming to have grown these fruits to mammoth weights of 17 to 22 pounds, but he was unable to verify these bold statements. Avinash mentioned the fruit is reminiscent of the famed Jalgaon eggplant but three times the size! These massive yet majestic eggplants, adorned in vibrant green with delicate white pinstripes, are capable of weighing a staggering 4 to 9 pounds.
