Growing from Seed
Transplanting is recommended. Direct seed only where summers are long. Do not cover seeds as light is required for germination. Mist or bottom water. A light dusting of vermiculite can help retain moisture.
Planting Considerations
Strawflowers like well-drained soil.
Harvesting
Pick flowers when 2-3 layers of petals (bracts) are open, for vase or for drying. Harvest on bright days because in overcast days and at night, mature flowers will close. Blooms will continue to open after cutting and over-mature flowers will shatter (fall apart) or discolor.
Storage
Pick stems for drying when outer petals are open but center still closed. Strip leaves and bundle in stems of 8-10. Hang upside down in warm place with good air circulation.
Pruning
Continued harvesting/deadheading will keep plants flowering.
