Alstroemeria
Alstroemeria
Alstromeria, also known as Peruvian lily, is a long-lasting cut flower in a rainbow of colors often striated or flecked with multi-colors. It is a warm climate perennial; plant tubers in pots to overwinter indoors or treat as an annual in colder climates. Alstroemaria is deer resistant. It looks great in cottage, exotic, and cut-flower gardens.

Growing from Seed
Growing from seed is challenging and not recommended. Purchasing a grown, potted plant is more reliable than dry tubers. Use caution dividing plants as the roots are very fragile.
If you do grow from seed, be aware that seeds do not necessarily bloom the same as the parent plant. Sow seeds in autumn in 3" (7.5 cm) pots with soilless medium and cover lightly with vermiculite. Cover pots with cling wrap. Keep indoors at 68ºF (20ºC) for three weeks, followed by 3 weeks at 40ºF (5ºC). Bring back into warmth 68ºF (20ºC ) until planting out.
Planting Considerations
Plant Peruvian lilies in a sheltered spot, avoiding too-moist soil. Plants benefit from staking. Mulch heavily in cooler climates to overwinter. Protect your skin when working with Peruvian lilies as they can cause severe dermatitis.
Harvesting
Harvest when flowers are budded- pull stem firmly from base of plant- do not cut.
Storage
Cover tubers in moist planting medium and store at 35-41°F (2-5°C)
Pruning
Deadhead through growing season to keep plants flowering.
