Damping Off

Identification

Damping off affects seedlings only. The lower stems of infected seedlings will start to collapse. Eventually, the seedlings die.

Damage prevention

Regularly disinfect gardening tools with a 70% or higher alcohol solution. Disinfect plastic starting trays if damping off has already been an issue in the past. Use a well-draining, pasteurized potting mixture in your seedling trays. Do not overwater nor plant your seeds too deeply. Try to germinate seeds at high temperatures, so that they quickly grow out of the phase where they are most at risk.

Physical control

Seedlings affected by damping off will inevitably die, so prevention is the only way to control this disease.

Chemical control

Seedlings affected by damping off will inevitably die, so prevention is the only way to control this disease.
